After playing all over the country for the past couple of years, these likeable larrikins have released their debut full length LP/CD. Recorded live to tape in a farmhouse near Trentham, Book of Matches includes a few songs we’ve heard before on a couple of previously released singles.

Described by Les Thomas (Unpaved) as “a talented train wreck of a country punk bluegrass band”, Cherrywood boast about having been offered money to leave Tamworth during the annual festival after upsetting the locals with their brand of country music.

The music is basically traditional country with a harder edge. Their live sound comes through as it should, given the number of gigs they’ve played at Fitzroy’s Old Bar and other inner Melbourne haunts.

The songs are uplifting despite having such titles as In My Time of Dying, Broken Heart for Christmas, Cryin’ in the Rain and Grandfather’s Funeral.

Comprising Tim Durkin, Joshua Seymour (a singer/songwriter in his own right), Chris Drane and Rob Daly, the band’s usual sparse instrumentation is augmented here with slide guitar courtesy of Josh Crawley (Graveyard Train).

Cherrywood is about to embark upon a two month national tour to launch Book of Matches. Catch them if you can!
