by Bill Callahan

Bill Callahan has been around for a long time now. Whether it’s under the Smog name or under his own, he’s been releasing albums since 1990! While many of the Smog albums are wonderful, he really seems to have come into his own on his last couple of albums under his own name. 2011’s Apocalypse was a great exercise in stripped back, slightly intense acoustic glory which he has continued on to his latest album Dream River. It’s the sort of album to listen to while sitting back on a summer’s day, just chilling out. It’s stripped back but his lyrics float along with images of eagles, droving and paintings, all sung in his wonderful baritone voice. Personally, Melbourne bands and artists have been dominating my favourite albums but Dream River buckles the trend. One of this year’s best!
