by Anton Delecca Quartet

The Anton Delecca Quartet returns with their third album ‘The Healer’. Out on Melbourne’s Jazz head label, the record contains seven of Delecca’s original compositions, a track by drummer Jonathan Zion, a terrific arrangement of Cole Porters Love for Sale and a version of Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered Richard Rodgers.

What I love about Delecca’s work is the mood, space and understated musicianship displayed throughout. His band Luke Howard (Piano), Jonathan Zion (acoustic bass) and Daniel Farrugia (Drums) respectfully approach the compositions with a genuine emotive touch. Every player on this record has serious jazz chops but you won’t find any OTT unnecessary or elongated shredding on this album. What you will find is a deep moodiness, which lingers throughout each piece, best absorbed by a linear listen. There is a sorrowful quality to the tracks brought upon by considered and sensitive playing from each quartet member. This record borders on the spiritual jazz side; its Middle Eastern flavors across tracks such as opener “The Ark” have an otherworldly sound scape-like quality.

A gorgeous collection of tracks that I will be listening to for years to come.
