by Martin Martini

Martin Martini is an underground figure in Australian music who has been seen as eccentric, brash, abrasively cynical and darkly satirical. Martini's songwriting is borne of the old, romantic vision of inspiration, as something which comes from above, or outside rational thought and consideration. He is a vessel from which spills odd songs and ballads, from the strangely beautiful and beguiling to the pouncing, gruff contrariness of stomps and old-style dancing numbers. In a sense, Martini is a primitive songwriter - he is not a commerical fisherman - it's as if he's on a boat in the middle of the river, waiting for a whale.

Martini has a normal life, a child, a partner and a 9-5 job and tends to his extensive garden to cook with the best ingredients. He is the Founding Member and Director of Pound Records, which is like his own unkempt garden where he finds the most delicious, though often inaudible music in Melbourne.
