Sal Kimber and The Rollin’ Wheel Southern Light (PBS feature record)
Almost 4 years since their last full-length album Sal Kimber & The Rollin’ Wheel return with an album that is intimate, instantly familiar and thoroughly satisfying. While an alt-country sensibility exists throughout the record, there’s also such strength in Kimber’s songwriting that this album should find many friends in musical communities beyond just those focusing on the roots and Americana traditions. Once again the record has been produced by Shane O’Mara and his sense of space and dynamics is clearly evident, especially on lead-off track ‘Stumble in the Dark’, the brooding ‘Wild Rose’ or album closer ‘Burrawang’. Like being enveloped in the loving embrace of close family, spending time with Sal Kimber & The Rollin’ Wheel’s Southern Light is a truly warming and enriching experience.

Ty Segall Emotional Mugger (Featured on The Breakfast Spread)

A decade of hyper-proliferation shows no sign of taking a toll on California's Ty Segall. At its heart, Emotional Mugger is a ripper rock 'n' roll record that gleefully throws you under the bus; a total departure from his last solo album Manipulator, Segall has used his studio time and nous to push things into the red in a whole new way. Weirder and looser, this bristles and fizzes from the moment the door swings open (literally). Emotional Mugger is indebted as much to glam rock and the heavy riff work of Segall's other project Fuzz as it his to his fried garage roots, with layers of lo-fi fuzz and squark stacked together to create a roaring sound. Segall chaotically throws ideas together, flicks the switch and sticks the landing. Under all the mess beats the pop smarts of an artist who won't be pinned down.
