Ace Records continue their excavation of that never ending gold mine of mid-sixties girl group sounds with this eighth volume in their Where The Girls Are series. Lots of reverb, dreamy harmonies, castanets, sighing about boys, you know how it goes! As usual there’s a great mix of lesser known gems by girl group staples like The Sapphires and Little Eva, as well as some lovely rarities by virtual unknowns like Kendra Spotswood and Ravita Marcell, not mention a grip of previously unreleased recordings, including one from an early incarnation of Martha and the Vandellas when they were The Del-Phis.

The sound quality on these Ace CD’s is unrivalled, with a glossy sheen that never takes away from the raw sound of the original recordings, and the booklet is packed with great liner notes detailing the story of every song, not to mention amazing photos of artists you never thought you’d see a picture of.

As you might imagine, being the 8th volume in a series this one a little short on truly earth shattering discoveries, but it’s a great listen all the way through, and with most selections seeing their first appearance on CD you can hardly fault Ace for continuing to go where the girls are.
